Firefox OS opens a new window of opportunities for India and Indian citizens. Most of the buyers in India are still price conscious and most of them still find owning a smartphone very expensive. The new Firefox OS phone redefines the smartphone category and breaks price barriers and makes it possible for a huge untapped Indian audience to own a smartphone now”.
Li Gong, President of Mozilla said, “Mozilla’s mission has always been global but the successful launch of the Firefox OS in Asia in the last quarter proves that this mission appeals to one of the fastest growing populations in the world. The expansion of Firefox OS into a brand new category of smartphones, along with the continued growth of new form factors holds great promise for the adoption of the Web technology and for enabling millions of people to access the web”.
Mozilla said it is growing the Firefox OS ecosystem through partnerships and collaborations with distributers, app developers and other OEMs as new devices are being launched in India. They said key app providers including Vuclip, ESPN, Zomato and eBay India will partner with the company to enrich Firefox marketplace and expand Firefox OS ecosystem in India. Neil Mawston, Executive Director of Strategy Analytics, said “the flexibility and open foundations of Firefox OS give operators more choice and empower OEMs to deliver smartphones at more affordable prices. He also said, as Firefox OS continues its expansion into key growth markets such as Asia, Central and Latin America, it has emerged out of the ‘other’ category as one of the top platforms for the global smartphone industry”.
